A Capella is an event series that aims to examine various aspects of the artistic practice as performative.

The first A Capella took place on the evening of August 18th, 2018 at Inbetween Gallery from 8pm to midnight. Four artists — Ciarra K. Walters, Giulia Bencivenga, Kandis Williams, and Negashi Armada — whose practice is heavily informed by literature, were asked to read from their works in progress, or to share a text that had inspired them recently. Furthermore, in the hopes of stirring conversation about capitalist rituals defining accessibility, artist Camilla Carper and three associates sewed 1x1 inch linen squares onto attendee’s clothing as a requirement to enter the space, inspired by the non-linen stickers required for entry at the museum adjacent to the gallery. In order to encourage giving the artists un-divided attention, I confiscated all phones at the door.
